How did Gunstock get its name?
This question is often asked our guests. Many times in history, significant events were not written down but passed on verbally from generation to generation. The historical account below comes from David Buckman who was a long term employee at Gunstock.

In the mid 1800’s there were several farms in what now comprises Gunstock’s base area and out to route 11A.  The area was much less thickly forested then than now and one old farmhouse foundation still rests in the woods not far from the old Try Me trail.

So the lore goes, on a fall day one of the farmers was hunting deer near the summit area when he chanced across a black bear feeding in the thick blueberry barrens and let go a shot at the bruin.  While his shot struck the animal, it didn’t kill it and the wounded bear charged the farmer. The gun the farmer was using was a one shot muzzle loader, which was common at the time, and with the bear coming at him and no time to reload, the gritty farmer took the riffle by the barrel and using it as a club dispatched the bear with the gun stock which is the wooden part of the rifle that usually rests against the shoulder when shooting. Hence the name Gunstock.
